We hope you like rushing yards
Statistically, the Broncos and Rebels can be summed up with the Pointing Spider-Man meme. Both squads feature elite ground games alongside good enough passers and defenses.
On the Broncos’ end, Ashton Jeanty is one of the nation’s best running backs and needs little explanation. For the Rebels, they get the job done with a three-headed backfield of Jai’Den Thomas (833 rushing yards, 7 touchdowns), quarterback Hajj-Malik Williams (768 yards, 9 TDs), and Kylin James (521 yards, 4 TDs).
As a result, neither team has prolific air attacks. Williams has thrown for only 1,735 yards for the year, while Boise State’s Maddux Madsen ranks 64th in passing yards per game. But they make it count when they throw the ball. Both quarterbacks have racked up touchdowns—Williams has thrown for 17 TDs against Madsen’s 21 TDs—and they’re in the top 25 nationally in expected points added (EPA) per dropback and passing success rate.
Dominant in conference play
The 11–1 Broncos and 10–2 Rebels also had identical trajectories following Boise’s Week 9 win over UNLV. Both squads went undefeated the rest of the season with one closer-than-expected win against a conference bottom-dweller. The Cowboys’ pass defense kept things tight in Boise’s 17–13 win over Wyoming, while the Rebels’ secondary had their hands full in Honolulu during their 29–27 win against Hawai’i.
Both teams’ losses also look better now that the regular season’s wrapped up. No. 1 Oregon needed a field goal to pull away from Boise, while the Rebels went toe-to-toe with Syracuse’s nation-leading pass attack in their 44–41 loss.
Boise State vs. UNLV prediction: experts favor Boise sweep
It says something that UNLV held Ashton Jeanty to season lows during their first match, and the Broncos still managed to win the game. Accordingly, oddsmakers and analysts expect Boise to do the same during Friday’s rematch.
Source | Game pick |
---|---|
Point spread | Boise by 4 |
ESPN Matchup Predictor | 68.8% Boise win probability |
Bill Connelly/SP+ | 61% Boise win probability, 33-28 projected score |
CFB Insiders | 65% Boise win probability, 34-29 projected score |
Boise State’s roadmap to a win is simple: bulldoze with Jeanty and make sure Madsen keeps the sticks moving. However, one interesting thing about Boise State and UNLV’s initial matchup is that the Rebels comfortably moved the ball on Boise State. They outplayed the Broncos by offensive yards per play (6.3 YPP versus 5.4 yards) and offensive success rate. (Boise State’s four fourth-down conversions, along with their turnover and time of possession advantages, were huge factors in the Broncos win.)
Boise State’s defense is no slouch—defensive ends Jayden Virgin-Morgan and Ahmed Hassanein rank in the top 40 nationally for tackles for loss—but their defense is boom-or-bust, as the Broncos rank 100th in plays allowed for more than 20 yards. Boise’s talent advantage should give them the edge tonight, but UNLV has the offensive and schematic firepower to pull off the upset. However, they’ll need to have the ball long enough to do so.
