New on TLC this week

Virgins | TLC | Reality

Series premiere, Monday, June 9: Reality shows are cringe—but what if one of them offered to help you score after three or four decades of accidental, incidental, intentional, or involuntary celibacy? Virgins balances cringe reality (e.g. Big Ed from TLC’s 90 Day Fiancé) authenticity and warmth (as seen in Netflix’s charming Love on the Spectrum) in a series seeking to deflower four adults aged 34–42. The only thing better—and even more worthwhile—would be a show rehabilitating alpha males and incels.

New on Hulu this week

The Kollective | Hulu | Drama

Series premiere, Tuesday, June 10: “After a sudden tragedy, a group of young citizen journalists find themselves embarking on a dangerous quest to expose the truth in a world ruled by corruption and lies.” That’s the official synopsis for this series starring Natasha McElhone (Californication), Celine Buckens (Cinemax’s Warrior), and Felix Mayr (The Meg 2: The Trench). Sounds kinda timely, in a scary way. If you can deal with more anxiety related to real-world political intrigue, this’ll ride that last nerve. All six episodes are available to stream today.

New on Netflix this week

Trainwreck: The Astroworld Tragedy | Netflix | Documentary series

New episodes starting, Tuesday, June 10: A new episode in this Netflix anthology series covers the disastrous 2021 Astroworld music festival, which ended in tragedy with 10 fatalities. Subsequent episodes, which premiere weekly, deal with the dumpster fire called ex-Toronton mayor Rob Ford, the infamous “Poop Cruise,” the “Balloon Boy” hoax, “The Cult of American Apparel,” “The Real Project X,” and more.

New on Netflix this week

FUBAR | Netflix | Comedy, drama

Season 2 premiere, Thursday, June 12: Not to be confused with the killer Canadian comedy trilogy of the same name, this Arnold Schwarzenegger daddy-daughter spy series returns for a second season. Carrie Anne Moss (The Matrix) joins the cast as a sexy ex-German spy with whom Schwarzenegger’s Luke Brunner has a romantic past. Expect more explosive action, espionage-related pickles, AHnuld movie references, and one-liners from comedian Fortune Feimster as Roo.

New on Syfy and Peacock this week

Revival | Peacock, Syfy | Drama, horror

Series premiere, Thursday, June 12: If you have zombie fatigue, I have good and bad news: Revival, based on the comics by Tim Seely and Mike Norton, isn’t a zombie series—but it also kinda is. This time, the walking dead act just like themselves—except when they don’t (some have super strength and fast-healing powers). And there’s a murder mystery involved, which probably stems from some strange event—like perhaps a bunch of dead people (“Revivers”) rising from the grave, potentially with superpowers. Melanie Scrofano (Wynonna Earp) stars, wrestler CM Punk guest stars. New episodes debut live on Syfy, then stream on Peacock a week later.

New on Hulu this week

Atsuko Okatsuka: Father | Hulu | Stand-up comedy

Special, Friday, June 13: In Taiwanese-American comedian Atsuko Okatsuka’s first special, she confesses to being clueless outside of her professional career: She hasn’t done laundry in seven years and had no idea marriage licenses are a thing. In the trailer for Father, Okatsuka says, “Women? Why do we have to know everything? Why do we have to be stable? What about the bitch that crumbles easily? I wanna grow my hair out, but I can’t—because this [points to her bowl haircut] is my brand!”

New movie releases available to rent/buy on VOD this week

Misericordia (2024)

In this comedy thriller from Alain Guiraudie (Stranger by the Lake), Jérémie (Félix Kysyl) is an unemployed baker who returns to his hometown to attend the funeral of his former boss/mentor. There, he clashes with her son (Jean-Baptiste Durand) and winds up in big trouble—and a clandestine fling with a priest. The French film mag Cahiers du Cinéma called the movie the best of the year, and it’s racked up a long list of award nominations (Cannes Film Festival, Lumière Awards, César Awards) and even a few wins (Golden Spike and Best Screenplay at the Valladolid International Film Festival, the Louis Delluc Prize for Best Film). You can rent Misericordia (aka Miséricorde) from video-on-demand (VOD) outlets like Prime Video, Google Movies & TV, and VUDU as of Tuesday, June 10.
