New on Apple TV+ this week

Down Cemetery Road | Apple TV+ | Thriller

Limited series, Wednesday, Oct. 29: In another Apple TV thriller series based on a Mick Herron book (the first being Slow Horses, now on its fifth season), a house blows up and a girl disappears. When the girl’s neighbor (Ruth Wilson) hires private investigator Zöe Boehm (Emma Thompson) to help find the girl, they stumble into a conspiracy. It seems that some supposedly dead people are still alive, while some living folks are dropping like flies. Two episodes stream today, with six more coming weekly on Wednesdays.

New on Prime Video this week

Hazbin Hotel | Prime Video | Adult animation, comedy

Season 2 premiere, Wednesday, October 29: In this very adult musical comedy series, Hell is overcrowded and Charlie, the princess of Hell, wants to deal with the problem non-violently. To that end, Charlie opens a rehab hotel where repentant Hell denizens can eventually get into Heaven. In the long-awaited second season, the hotel is booming but anti-Heaven sentiment is on the rise and the Vees wanna take it over.

New on Netflix this week

The Witcher | Netflix | Fantasy, drama

Season 4 premiere, Thursday, October 30: In the fourth season of The Witcher, Henry Cavill’s out and Liam Hemsworth’s in as main character Geralt of Rivia. That has to bum some fans out, but Hemsworth looks pretty badass in the trailer. Also, fans would probably prefer swapping leads to ending the show before adapting the remaining books in Andrzej Sapkowski’s fantasy series. That’s happening, by the way—since a fifth and final season was filmed back-to-back with this one. Laurence Fishburne joins the cast this season.

New on Shudder this week

Trick or Treat Watch Party: Halloween (1978) and Deadstream (2022) | Hulu | Horror

Double feature, Friday, Oct. 31, 9:00 p.m. ET: Trick or treat, smell my feet, gimme something good to watch! If you haven’t already planned what to screen at your Halloween party, this is a solid bet. You get John Carpenter’s terrifying classic 1978 slasher Halloween first, then the fantastic 2022 found-footage horror comedy Deadstream from Joseph Winter and Vanessa Winter. But if these don’t slash yer throat float your boat, we have 280+ horror movie recommendations—across nine different streaming services—in our 31 Days of Halloween Ultimate Streaming Guide.

New on HBO and HBO Max this week

I Love LA | HBO, HBO Max | Comedy

Series premiere, Sunday, Nov. 2, 10:30 p.m. ET: “An ambitious friend group navigates life and love in LA.” That’s it, folks. That’s everything HBO wants us to know about this series starring Rachel Sennott (Bottoms, Shiva Baby). So why recommend it? Call it a hunch. Or maybe it’s all about my English Teacher (FX, Hulu) fandom, because that show’s Jordan Firstman (delightful as Malcolm on the show) is also in the cast for I Love LA. Or maybe this show just seems like a coast-swapping, progressive Friends (which still sounds good despite my not really enjoying Friends). Expect one episode a week (eight total) through December 21.

New on MGM+ this week

Robin Hood | MGM+ | Drama

Series premiere, Sunday, Nov. 2, 9 p.m. ET: The story of Robin Hood is only too familiar, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be souped up and reimagined. In Amazon Studios’ version, “Rob” (Jack Patten) grapples with inner demons while fighting the Norman elite (aka robbin’ from the rich, givin’ to the poor) in what the studio calls “a rich tapestry of historical accuracy, modern relevance, and intricate character dynamics.” Lauren McQueen and Sean Bean also star. We get two episodes today and the remaining eight will come weekly thereafter.

In this Malaysian horror film, a man struggling to raise his non-verbal daughter takes a job as handyman for a woman who claims she can help the girl speak again—but with treatment comes terrifying visions for both father and daughter. You can rent Indera from video-on-demand (VOD) outlets like Prime Video, Google Movies & TV, and Fandango at Home (formerly VUDU) as of Friday, Oct. 31.
