New on TV this week

Wynonna Earp: Vengeance, a fan-demanded story wrap-up movie for the canceled 2016–2021 Syfy series Wynonna Earp, dropped quietly on Tubi last week. So quietly that I, a Wynonna fan and TV professional of some standing, was not even aware of its premiere until the day it happened. I’m not blaming Tubi PR, but I’m not not blaming Tubi PR.

This week’s What To Watch recs include new series High Potential, Agatha All Along, and The Penguin; the return of cult horror favorite From; Zack Synder’s Twilight of the Gods anime; acclaimed movie His Three Daughters; and UEFA Champions League soccer action. Get in the stream!

ABC W2W Icon New on ABC this week

A blonde woman with a lollipop stick in her mouth and pink rubber gloves looks through an opening in window blinds, her eyes wide.

High Potential | ABC, Hulu | Drama, Comedy

Series premiere, Tuesday, September 17: Monk, Bones, Elsbeth—now add High Potential to TV’s long list of Quirky Outsider Helps Police Solve Crimes shows. Single mom Morgan (Kaitlin Olson, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) works as a janitor at a police station, and, one insightful comment on a case later, she’s hired as a consultant. She’s then partnered with a straight-laced detective (Daniel Sunjata) because, of course, she is. Sounds familiar, but at least High Potential isn’t another game show from ABC’s past. Watch trailer

Disney+ W2W Icon New on Disney+ this week

Agatha Harkness, a woman with dark curly hair, an old-fashioned dress and purple robe, and blackened fingertips, stands in a suburban front yard.

Agatha All Along | Disney+ | Drama, comedy, fantasy

Series premiere, Wednesday, September 18: Agatha Harkness (played by Kathryn Hahn) was a breakout fan favorite from 2021’s WandaVision, but it’s taken Marvel/Disney over three years to materialize Agatha Ever After. (Good thing she’s magically unforgettable!) Picking up after Agatha lost her powers in WandaVision, she’s now traveling the Witches’ Road to get them back. Agatha All Along also stars Aubrey Plaza, Sasheer Zamata, and Patti LuPone; two of nine episodes drop on September 18. Watch trailer

 New on Max this week

The Penguin | HBO, Max | Drama, fantasy

Series premiere, Thursday, September 19: Colin Farrell reprises his role as Gotham mob underboss Oz Cobb from 2022’s The Batman in The Penguin, an eight-episode DC Comic series. With the city in chaos (and underwater) after the events of The Batman, Oz lays plans to make himself Gotham’s ruling crime lord. But he’ll have to get past a fresh-out-of-Arkham-Asylum mob heiress, Sofia Falcone (Cristin Milioti), first—this show is more Sopranos than superheroes. The Penguin moves to Sundays on September 22. Twilight of the Gods | Netflix | Anime, fantasy

Series premiere, Thursday, September 19: With a voice cast that includes Lauren Cohan, Sylvia Hoeks, Jamie Chung, Peter Stormare, and Corey Stoll, Twilight of the Gods is an ambitious animated undertaking—as you’d expect from Zack Snyder. “My imagination was always really sparked by the Norse gods … Thor, Odin, an adventure story about love, redemption, and revenge set in this amazing landscape,” Snyder told Netflix’s Tudum. Also: plenty of violence, blood, and nudity. Watch trailer

A Very Royal Scandal | Prime Video | Drama

Series premiere, Thursday, September 19: The producers behind A Very English Scandal and A Very British Scandal are back with A Very Royal Scandal—sensing a theme here? A Very Royal Scandal dramatizes the events around the infamous 2019 BBC interview between journalist Emily Maitlis (played by Ruth Wilson) and Prince Andrew (Michael Sheen). Devoted What To Watch readers (is there any other kind?) will remember that Netflix already covered this biopic territory with Scoop back in April. Watch trailer

Omni Loop (2024)
