Does DIRECTV have internet?
DIRECTV sells only satellite TV service—it was never an internet service provider (ISP). You do, however, need an internet connection to access some DIRECTV (or DIRECTV Via Satellite) features and to use the Stream with DIRECTV streaming service.
Which is the best internet provider to use with DIRECTV? Our internet and TV experts crunched some numbers and arrived at three recommendations: AT&T (best overall), CenturyLink (best contract), and Xfinity (best deal). We’ve also included a handy tool to help you find other internet service providers near you.
Best internet providers to use with DIRECTV
- Best overall—AT&T ($55.00–$155.00/mo., 100–5,000 Mbps)
- Best contract—CenturyLink ($50.00–$75.00/mo., 100–940 Mbps)
- Best deal—Xfinity ($40.00–$100.00/mo., 300–2,000 Mbps)
If AT&T, CenturyLink, and Xfinity aren’t a good fit for you—or they’re unavailable where you live—the tool below can help you find a local internet service provider.

Pros
- Wide availability
- Download speeds up to 5,000 Mbps
Cons
- Limited availability for fastest speeds
AT&T offers mostly fiber internet, along with AT&T Internet Air. With recent advances in its fiber network, it now offers speeds up to 5,000 Mbps in select areas.
If you’re cruising at speeds that fast, though, you might want to consider switching over to a more affordable live TV streaming service, rather than old-school satellite internet.
Recommended AT&T Fiber internet plans
With 300 Mbps speeds, AT&T Fiber Internet 300 has more than enough speed for streaming DIRECTV—plus some simultaneous video/game streaming on other devices. This plan could also be the small-families pick.
- Best for singles or budgets: AT&T Fiber Internet 300 (300 Mbps for $55.00/mo.)
- Best for small families: AT&T Fiber Internet 500 (500 Mbps for $65.00/mo.)
- Best for large families and power users: AT&T Fiber Internet 1 Gig (1,000 Mbps $65.00/mo.)
Best contract: CenturyLink

Pros
- Fiber speeds up to 940 Mbps (download and upload)
- Internet and phone service available
- No contracts
- Wider availability
Cons
- Disappointing customer service compared to DIRECTV
CenturyLink has three fiber plans. The fastest, CenturyLink Fiber Gigabit, costs $75 a month and has download and upload speeds up to 940 Mbps. This is one of the cheapest fiber plans out there.
On the DSL side, CenturyLink charges $55 per month for up to 140 Mbps. That’s a fairly average price for internet, and 140 Mbps is a fast enough download speed for most families.
Recommended CenturyLink internet plans
Even the slowest of these recommended CenturyLink plans has plenty of speed for streaming DIRECTV—but CenturyLink Fiber Internet 500 Mbps is the same price. You might as well get that if you’re in the provider’s fiber optic area.
- Best for singles and budgets: Simply Unlimited Internet 140 Mbps (DSL internet for $55.00/mo.)
- Best for small families: CenturyLink Fiber Internet 500 Mbps ($55.00/mo.)
- Best for large families and power users: CenturyLink Fiber Gigabit (940 Mbps for $75.00/mo.)
Best deal: Xfinity

Pros
- Speeds up to 2,000 Mbps
- Bundle discounts available
Cons
- No budget internet plan
With Xfinity, you can choose from up to 5 cable internet plans with 300–2,000 Mbps speeds.
Plan prices range from cheap ($40.00/mo. for 300 Mbps) to competitive ($70.00/mo. for 1 Gig Mbps) and a bit high ($100.00/mo. for 1,200 Mbps).
Some providers—like Astound Broadband, Google Fiber, and Ziply—have faster connections (including fiber) for cheaper, but they can’t compete with Xfinity’s availability.
Recommended Xfinity internet plans
We wish Xfinity still offered its budget 150 Mbps plan. Its 300 Mbps plan is a reasonable upgrade, though, so we can’t complain.
- Best for singles and budgets: 300 Mbps ($40.00/mo.)
- Best for small families: 500 Mbps ($55.00/mo.)
- Best for large families and power users: 1 Gig ($70.00/mo.) or 2 Gig ($100.00/mo.)
