What are the Primetime Emmy Awards?

The Emmys are to TV what the Oscars are to film: a televised awards show where celebrities get dressed up to be elevated or let down—while we cheer and jeer from our couches. And the Primetime Emmys recognize artistic and technical merit in television series that air after we’re home from work with dinner in our bellies (or are available to stream or download in at least half of the US).

Technically, this next Emmys ceremony is honoring the 2023 season, despite taking place in 2024—the original ceremony was postponed due to the Hollywood strikes.

Where to watch the Primetime Emmy Awards

The Emmys broadcast rights change hands every year, but FOX is the network you need to watch the Primetime Emmys in 2024.

How to watch the Primetime Emmy Awards on FOX

Most traditional (cable and satellite) TV providers and live TV streaming services carry the FOX network. We recommend DISH Network for traditional TV providers and YouTube TV for streaming.

Another way to watch the Primetime Emmys is with an over-the-air (OTA) TV antenna. They’re affordable ($25–$60), easy to install, and they’ll pick up your local FOX affiliate and many other live TV channels.

How to watch the Primetime Emmy Awards without cable

If something prevents you from watching the Primetime Emmys live, you can stream the festivities free on demand—after the fact, of course—on the Emmys website. Just sign up for a free account, and you’re all set.

Pro tip: Those over-the-air (OTA) TV antennas aren’t free, but you pay for them only once. Then you can enjoy your free channels forever without a monthly TV payment.

Primetime Emmys FAQ

Is there a difference between an Emmy and Primetime Emmy?

“Emmy” is a general term for any award given by the Television Academy. The awards are divided up into several categories; what most people think of as the Emmys are actually the Primetime Emmys. Other categories include the Daytime Emmys, Sports Emmys, Children’s and Family Emmys, and Creative Arts Emmys.

Who were the Emmy winners 2023?

The 2023 Emmys will take place on January 15, 2024, so we don’t know who the 2023 winners are yet! However, some winners were announced ahead of time at the Creative Arts ceremony, including The Bear, BEEF, and The White Lotus for Outstanding Casting, and Daisy Jones & The Six, House of the Dragon, Wednesday, and BEEF for Outstanding Costumes.

What time are the Primetime Emmy Awards on?

The Primetime Emmys are on January 15, 2024, at 8 p.m. ET on FOX.

Who is hosting the Emmys in 2024?

Anthony Anderson is hosting the 2024 Emmy Awards. You might know him better as Dre from ABC’s black-ish.

Are the Golden Globes the same thing as the Emmys?

No, the Golden Globes are not the same thing as the Emmys. While both ceremonies honor achievements in television, the Golden Globes also cover film, while the Emmys don’t. They’re also held by two different organizations—the Golden Globes by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (until 2023, when they were bought out by Dick Clark Productions) and the Emmys by the Television Academy.

Where are the Emmys held?

The Emmys will be held on January 15, 2024, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, CA.
