Is EPIX NOW good?

EPIX probably isn’t going to be your be-all-end-all TV source of entertainment. But, as a premium cable/satellite add-on channel or standalone streaming service—EPIX NOW—it has a deep library of current and classic films that movie buffs can dive into for $5.99 a month. (EPIX is owned by MGM Studios, which lends some serious cinematic cred.)

But, if you’re looking for a steady stream of new, original series like Netflix and Hulu crank out, that’s not EPIX’s thing (yet). Its small stable of originals includes Britannia, War of the Worlds, and Condor, all of which have some critical buzz, if not widespread recognition.

EPIX NOW is for movie fans, straight-up. If that’s you, EPIX NOW is a nice addition to your app lineup for just $5.99 a month.

EPIX NOW pros and cons

EPIX NOW is one of the least expensive ad-free streaming services; Paramount+, Peacock, and Hulu’s cheaper plans come with unavoidable commercials. We’ve reviewed both versions of all these services, so trust us: once you go ad-free, it’s painful to go back to ad-full.

EPIX NOW shows and movies

As mentioned up top, EPIX NOW is all about movies and just a little bit about original shows. Kind of like the early days of Apple TV+, EPIX’s originals are high-quality dramas and documentaries that would likely generate bigger buzz on a more popular service. DC Universe series Pennyworth just moved from EPIX to HBO Max—now watch it blow up.

EPIX NOW specs and features

EPIX NOW offers basic functions like closed captioning and (some) offline downloads but no parental controls. Since there’s not much content of interest on EPIX NOW for kids besides Sonic the Hedgehog, it’s probably not a dealbreaker.

EPIX NOW streams

Plan Simultaneous streams Offline downloads

EPIX NOW offers four simultaneous streams—one better than the competition’s average of three. It also allows for offline downloads of most of its content and will let you keep them for 30 days before auto-deletion. More streams in your home network work is nice; watching movies away from that or any other network is even nicer.

EPIX NOW’s audio output is standard 2.0 stereo with no Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound capability, which will be a bit of a letdown for the service’s cinephile target audience.

Final take: Is EPIX NOW worth it?

Hardcore movie buffs would have months of fun with EPIX NOW as their only streaming service, but the average viewer will be left wanting for more (namely, must-see original series). Still, for $5.99 a month, EPIX NOW (or the cable/satellite EPIX premium add-on) could be an inexpensive and content-rich addition to your app lineup.

Is EPIX NOW free with Amazon Prime Video?

Even though Amazon owns MGM Studios and EPIX, EPIX is not included free with Prime Video. But, you can subscribe to EPIX as a Prime Video channel for the standard price of $5.99 a month after a seven-day free trial.

What’s the difference between EPIX and EPIX NOW?

EPIX is a premium live add-on channel that can be subscribed to through cable and satellite services like Xfinity, DIRECTV, and YouTube TV, as well as Amazon Prime Video. EPIX NOW is a standalone app that carries the same content as EPIX on-demand.

How much is EPIX NOW a month?

EPIX NOW costs $5.99 a month, the same as an EPIX premium add-on through cable or satellite TV.
