How to get a free smartphone through your phone carrier
When it comes to technology, two things are especially true these days:
- You can’t get by without an internet or cell phone plan.
- Cell phones are pricier than ever.
That said, you don’t have to dig out the duct tape to get another year out of your old smartphone just yet. Many cell phone and internet service providers (ISPs) offer great deals that’ll give you a year of service or the latest smartphones for free. Wondering how to get these savings? Keep reading my guide to find out more.

What to look for in free cell phone deals
If you’re looking to pair your home Wi-Fi with a free mobile line, finding the right bundle takes a little bit of strategy. Keep these factors in mind as you compare promotions:
Government assistance vs. provider promos
Two main ways to get free or low-cost phone and internet service are government subsidy programs and deals from internet and wireless providers.
Lifeline is a federal program that offers discounted cell phone and internet service to qualifying households enrolled in programs like food stamps or Medicaid. If you’re a resident of tribal land, you can potentially stack multiple federal discounts to get your cell phone service for free
If you don’t meet Lifeline income requirements, commercial provider bundles (like combining home high-speed internet with a free mobile line) offer the best path to zero-dollar wireless service.
Contract length and promo periods
Most commercial free-line promotions last 12 months, though some ISPs offer ongoing discounts or multi-year price locks. Make sure you check when the promotional pricing ends so you aren’t caught off guard by a higher rate in month 13.
Qualification requirements
To unlock a provider’s free mobile line deal, ISPs typically require you to be a new home internet subscriber or upgrade to a specific speed tier (such as 300 Mbps or higher). Some deals may also require you to bring your own device or port in an existing mobile phone number. Just be sure to check the fine print before you sign up.

What are the best free cell phone with internet deals right now?
As CableTV.com’s resident deals expert, I say Spectrum and Xfinity offer the best free cell phone with internet promos right now. Both providers consistently offer promotions that give you a full year of unlimited mobile service for free when you sign up for home internet.
Which one is best for you ultimately comes down to location and service availability—though if you’re leaning toward Xfinity, it’s worth noting that Xfinity TV is also our official Best Traditional Cable Internet award winner.
If you’re looking for free goodies like the latest iPhone, providers like Optimum often offer up attractive flagship device promos. But phone trade-ins like Optimum’s tend to fluctuate throughout the year. I recommend prioritizing a free unlimited service line — it locks in recurring savings on your monthly bill without the hassle of device trade-in fine print.
