How to watch “1883”

“Yellowstone” spinoff “1883” is a Dutton family prequel series set in 19th century America, and it’s only available to view on the streaming service Paramount+. To watch all 10 episodes of the original Western, you’ll need to cowboy up with either an Paramount+ Essential ($7.99 a month, with ads) or Paramount+ with SHOWTIME ($12.99 a month, no ads) subscription.

In June of 2023, “1883” began running its first and only season on cable’s Paramount Network as weekly episodes (sorry, no binge-watching).

Worth noting: Unlike “1883,” Paramount Network cable series “Yellowstone” is available to stream only on Peacock. Confusing, we know, but at least Paramount+ offers a free seven-day trial to take the service for a spin, which is ample time to sample the service’s 30,000 other hours of TV shows and movies.

What is “1883?”

Paramount Network series “Yellowstone” is such a massive cable hit that Paramount+ has put several spin-offs from creator/writer Taylor Sheridan into production, the first being “1883.” The 10-episode limited series, which premiered in December 2021, follows the post–Civil War Dutton family as they cross the Great Plains to establish the original Yellowstone Ranch in Montana.

This rugged Western series stars Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, and (of course) Sam Elliott, and it also features guest appearances from Tom Hanks, Billy Bob Thornton, and Sheridan himself. Unlike “Yellowstone,” “1883” is a standalone, one-season limited series. The second Dutton family prequel saga, “1923,” premiered in December 2022 on Paramount+.

Final take: Go west to “1883”

If you’re a fan of “Yellowstone,” you’ve probably already made your way through “1883”. The series is one of Paramount+’s biggest hits, alongside “Mayor of Kingstown” (coincidentally, another Taylor Sheridan production). Paramount+’s days of being known as just a Star Trek streamer are officially over.

If you’re new to the Yellowstone-verse, we recommend starting with the o.g. “Yellowstone” series on Peacock before diving into “1883” on Paramount+. That way, you’ll have context for not only “1883,” but also the upcoming sequels and spinoffs like “1944,” “6666,” “Marshals,” “The Madison,” and “The Dutton Ranch.”
