Iron Bowl 2023: How To Watch Alabama vs. Auburn, Time, Channel, and More

When does Auburn play Alabama? Get ready for this year’s Iron Bowl with our watch guide.

The SEC has no shortage of great rivalries, but there’s a reason why the Iron Bowl is among the conference’s best matchups: Auburn and Alabama fans always keep things heated, and the football’s equally watchable.

This year’s edition of the Iron Bowl looks more than a little uneven on paper. Alabama has already locked down the SEC East ahead of a matchup with Georgia and a dark horse playoff bid, while Auburn is undergoing a to-the-studs rebuild under first-year coach Hugh Freeze. But if history and past Iron Bowls have taught us anything, expect the unexpected. Here’s what you need to know about watching Alabama vs. Auburn.

What time is the Iron Bowl?

Analysts all but wrote off Alabama after its early-season struggles, but Saban’s club has decisively rounded into postseason form. Jalen Milroe’s been a dual-threat force for Alabama, as he’s third on the team in rushing yards and first in rushing touchdowns.

As for Auburn, the Tigers opened up SEC conference play with a rough four-game losing streak. They rebounded nicely with a five-game winning streak but suffered an ugly upset loss to New Mexico State last weekend.

Alabama vs. Auburn will be on Saturday, November 25. The 2023 Iron Bowl will air on CBS at 2:30 p.m. CT from Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Ala.

Auburn vs. Alabama preview

Auburn and Alabama have already locked down berths for bowl eligibility and the SEC Championship Game. But bragging rights and a chance to potentially torpedo Alabama’s playoff odds are on the line in this year’s Iron Bowl.

Here are our biggest questions ahead of Alabama vs. Auburn.

Auburn vs. Alabama by the stats

Stat Auburn Alabama
ESPN FPI 31st 4th

Rushing yards per game 194.3 (22th) 176.3 (44th)

Passing defense 196.5 (26th) 192.5 (23rd)

Can Auburn scheme its way open?

Hugh Freeze has always been able to MacGuyver together a functional offense, and this year’s Auburn team is no exception. The Tigers rank 22nd nationally in rushing yards and a whopping 121st in passing yardage, although quarterback Payton Thorne strung together multiple multi-touchdown games over Auburn’s SEC win streak.

But needless to say, Alabama is a far more formidable opponent than Arkansas, Vanderbilt, or Mississippi State. Alongside lead running back Jarquez Hunter, expect a healthy amount of quarterback runs from Thorne to keep Alabama’s defense on their toes.

Alabama goes as Jalen goes

On paper, it’s tough to find a potential weak spot for Alabama heading into the Iron Bowl. But in the spirit of Auburn fans rooting for the Tigers to keep the Iron Bowl interesting, we’ll highlight a few notable points.

Alabama’s offense flows through Jalen Milroe’s rushing ability, and it’s no coincidence that Arkansas and Texas A&M kept things close by bottling him up and getting sacks. (That said, Milroe also passed for more than 200 yards and multiple touchdowns in both games, so this strategy isn’t perfect.)

Auburn’s defense isn’t world-beating, but it kept the Tigers competitive in close losses to Ole Miss and Georgia. If Auburn can generate consistent pressure on Alabama’s offensive line, they could potentially make Alabama sweat out a win.
