The SEC has no shortage of great rivalries, but there’s a reason why the Iron Bowl is among the conference’s best matchups: Auburn and Alabama fans always keep things heated, and the football’s equally watchable.
This year’s edition of the Iron Bowl looked more than a little uneven on paper a few weeks ago. Alabama was on its way to a likely playoff bid, while Auburn had struggled through another down year from Hugh Freeze and Payton Thorne. But if history, the past few weeks, and previous Iron Bowls have taught us anything, expect the unexpected. Here’s what you need to know about watching Alabama vs. Auburn and the 2024 Iron Bowl.
What time is the Iron Bowl?
Alabama’s had some uncharacteristic dips in Kalen DeBoer’s inaugural season, and they’re entering the Iron Bowl on a bumpy trajectory. The momentum from big wins against Georgia, LSU, and Missouri have been all but sapped after their upset blowout loss to Oklahoma. The Crimson Tide’s thin playoff hopes depend on their ability to come out hot against Auburn.
As for Auburn, the Tigers have undergone another rough year under head coach Hugh Freeze. But Auburn notched a huge overtime win against Texas A&M last week, and the only thing standing between the Tigers and bowl eligibility is the Crimson Tide.
Alabama vs. Auburn will be on Saturday, November 30. The 2024 Iron Bowl will air on ABC at 2:30 p.m. CT/3:30 p.m. ET from Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Can Auburn do it again?
Auburn’s decision to ride with Payton Thorne this season has mostly flopped, but the Tigers acquitted themselves nicely in last weekend’s win over Texas A&M. Thorne put together his best game of the season, while running back Jarquez Hunter and receivers Cam Coleman and KeAndre Lambert-Smith each cracked 100 yards.
Offensive yardage generally hasn’t been the problem for the Tigers—they cracked six yards per play four times in conference play. The problem’s been converting those yards into points, as Auburn ranks 128th in turnover margin and 107th in red zone efficiency. The Tigers can get their yards against an undisciplined Alabama rush defense, but will they be able to put points on the board?
Alabama goes as Jalen goes
The story of 2024 Alabama’s been its inconsistency, and that’s been defined by Jalen Milroe’s swings this season. Milroe’s alternated between highs and lows, none of which were worse than last weekend’s 24-3 blowout loss to Oklahoma—Milroe went 11-for-26 for 164 yards and three picks.
That said, Alabama still has an arsenal of offensive talent like receiver Ryan Williams, home field advantage, and a substantial head start in the series—Auburn hasn’t won in Tuscaloosa since 2010. Auburn’s pass defense is also beatable, as they’re 50th by air yardage allowed and 47th in explosive passing plays allowed of more than 20 yards.
