New on TV this week

This week’s “What To Watch” picks include a TV adaptation of “Cape Fear” (Apple TV), a new Mindy Kaling joint called “Not Suitable for Work” (Hulu), and the third season of “Interview with A Vampire” under a new name (AMC, AMC+).
We also recommend Questlove’s Earth, Wind & Fire documentary (HBO, HBO Max), the fourth season of “The Legend of Vox Machina” (Prime Video), and the haunted hotel horror “Hokum” on video-on-demand (VOD). Let’s hit the couch!
New on Hulu this week
“Not Suitable for Work” | Hulu | Comedy
Series premiere, Tuesday, June 2: From Mindy Kaling (“The Office,” “The Sex Lives of College Girls,” “The Mindy Project”) comes this comedy about a group of workaholics (Ella Hunt, Avantika, Will Angus, Jack Martin, Nicholas Duvernay, and Jay Ellis) in their twenties trying to make it—and maybe even be happy—in Manhattan’s posh Murray Hill neighborhood. Three episodes premiere today, with the rest coming two-a-week through the season finale on June 23.
New on Prime Video this week
“The Legend of Vox Machina” | Prime Video | Adult animation, fantasy
Season 4 premiere, Wednesday, June 3: The hilarious, raunchy animated series adapting the bazillion-episode first campaign of the “Dungeons & Dragons” actual play show “Critical Role” returns for a fourth season. Immediately following the events of the third season, the Vox Machina crew “has separated, searching for love, family, and purpose. But as always, the call of adventure is a breath away. When a long-slumbering evil awakens to threaten the realm, they must reunite to take on an epic foe.” Tonight’s premiere consists of three episodes, with three more coming each week through season’s end. Fans note: The series is already renewed for a fifth and final season.
New on Apple TV this week
“Cape Fear” | Apple TV | Drama, thriller
Series premiere, Friday, June 5: I remember being terrified by swole, tatted-up Robert De Niro as the brooding, vengeful ex-con Max Cady in Martin Scorsese’s 1991 film version of “Cape Fear.” I’m already freaked out knowing Javier Bardem—who scared me just as much with his deadpan turn as Anton Chigur in the Coen Brothers’ “No Country for Old Men”—has the role in Nick Antosca’s (“The Act”) TV series adaptation, where Bardem gets to go full wacko. Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson portray the married attorneys whose family is the object of Cady’s obsession thanks to the couple putting Cady in the clink. We get the first two episodes today and the other eight will come weekly thereafter.

New on AMC and AMC+ this week
Season 3 premiere, Sunday, June 7, 9pm ET: For its third season, “Interview with the Vampire” becomes “The Vampire Lestat,” taking the name and following the events of the second novel in Anne Rice’s storied vampire series. Lestat de Lioncourt has become the world’s first immortal rock star (uh, hello, ever heard of Keith Richards?), going on tour while being haunted by muses from his “wild and rebellious past.” Speakin’ of things from the past, the show has a ’70s glam rock soundtrack with original tunes written by composer Daniel Hart and performed by Lestat himself (Sam Reid). After tonight’s premiere, new episodes (seven total) come weekly through July 19.

New on HBO and HBO Max this week
“Earth, Wind & Fire (To Be Celestial vs. That’s the Weight of the World)” | HBO, HBO Max | Documentary, music
Movie, Sunday, June 7, 9 p.m. ET: With his latest documentary, Oscar– and GRAMMY®-winning director/musician Questlove (“Summer of Soul”) turns his attention to the long-running R&B band, Earth, Wind & Fire. From the press release: “[The film traces the band’s] genesis through late founding member Maurice White, chronicling their evolution, highs and lows, and relevance from the 1970s into the present day while exploring the deep philosophical and spiritual meaning behind their message and music.” The doc airs live tonight on HBO but will be available to stream on HBO Max.
