Entertainment writer Randy Harward recommends the best shows and movies on TV this week, including "Yaga," "Nobody Wants This," "Newlyweds," and "Phony."

New on TV this week

A collage of images from "Yaga," "Nobody Wants This," "Newlyweds," and "Phony," shows covered in CableTV.com’s What to Watch This Week column for Oct. 19–25.
Clockwise from top left: "Yaga" (Christopher Lawrence/Crave), "Nobody Wants This" (Netflix), "Newlyweds" (NBC), and "Phony" (David Astorga/Disney).

This week’s “What To Watch” picks include the creepy Canadian series “Yaga” (AMC+), the third season of the rom-com “Nobody Wants This” (Netflix), the new sitcom “Newlyweds” (Peacock), and the comedy-mystery “Phony” (Hulu).

I’m also pluggin’ “Joe Bob’s Halloween House Party” (Shudder), and the documentary “Paralyzed by Hope: The Maria Bamford Story” (Netflix). Let’s hit the couch!

New on Hulu this week

“Phony” | Hulu | Comedy, mystery, thriller

Series premiere, Tuesday, Oct. 20: Between films like “Other Mommy” and “Goodnight Mommy” (PSA: the 2014 Austrian original is better than the 2022 American remake), the “mom might not be mom” plot device sure is getting popular. In this dark comedic mystery, a young man (Sam Nivola) wakes up in the hospital following a car crash and is convinced his mother (Connie Britton) has been replaced by an identical impostor. Two episodes drop today, with the rest coming weekly thereafter.

New on Netflix this week

“Nobody Wants This” | Netflix | Comedy

Season 3 premiere, Thursday, Oct. 22: The unevenly yoked couple of agnostic sex podcaster Joanne (Kristen Bell) and “hot rabbi” Noah (Adam Brody) returns for a third season of odd-couple love, where the pair continue the struggle to merge their divergent lives. Bolstered by exciting guest spots from Sarah Silverman (as a new rabbi) and Andrew Rannells (as a gossipy newcomer), Season 3 doubles down on Bell’s and Brody’s chemistry and the writers’ keen observational humor.

New on Shudder this week

“Joe Bob’s Halloween House Party” | Shudder | Horror

Movie double feature, Friday, Oct. 23: Yup, it’s another Joe Bob Briggs special, showing that Shudder may have canceled his show “The Last Drive-In,” but they know we can’t go cold turkey with this behatted, Lone Star-swillin’ horror host. So I can’t tell you which two movies we’ll be watching tonight — ’cause they rarely say in advance. But as I always say in these situations, it doesn’t matter. Joe Bob makes every episode and special one hell of a good time.

New on NBC and Peacock this week

“Newlyweds” | NBC, Peacock | Comedy

Series premiere, Friday, Oct. 23, 8:30 p.m. ET: Only fools rush in, they say. They also say opposites attract. In this romantic sitcom from “Will & Grace” writer Gail Lerner, actual married couple Téa Leoni (the carefree one) and Tim Daly (the reserved professor) play the oppos, who marry on a whim. This is the part where hilarity — not to mention complications — ensue. Watch for Jamie Lee Curtis in a recurring role. The show airs live on NBC every Friday and streams on Peacock the following day.

New on AMC+ this week

“Yaga” | AMC+ | Drama, horror

Series premiere, Friday, Oct. 23: Carrie-Anne Moss (“The Matrix”) stars in this eight-part contemporary mystery thriller inspired by the Slavic myth of Baba Yaga. For the uninitiated, the Baba Yaga, who’s either a child-eating crone or a nice old lady. I’m guessin’ this series is goin’ with the former definition, which is cool since the legend doesn’t get much play in American pop culture. Adapted by showrunner Kat Sandler from her acclaimed stage play. This is another “two-episodes now, the rest weekly” release.

New on Netflix this week

“Paralyzed by Hope: The Maria Bamford Story” | Netflix | Documentary

Movie, Friday, Oct. 23: Co-directed by Judd Apatow and Neil Berkeley, this documentary chronicles the life, career, and mental health journey of stand-up comedian Maria Bamford. Already well known for her multi-voiced, confessional routines that illustrate everything from people in her life to her wonderfully chaotic inner monologue, the comedian’s comedian gets even more candid in the film, which is sure to make this a compelling watch.
