What To Watch This Week: Stream Our Top 7 TV and Movie Picks (Sep. 7–13)

This week’s “What To Watch” picks include a new comedy special from Stavros Halkias and the new adult-animated series “Dang!” (both on Netflix), the Aussie drama “Last Seen” (Apple TV), and a new live-action Adult Swim series “The Terrors of Jordan Mendoza.”

Also, the second season of “The Paper” is coming to Peacock and the Aussie rom-com “Colin from Accounts” is wrapping up with its third season on Paramount+.Let’s hit the couch!

“Dang!” | Netflix | Adult animation, comedy

Series premiere, Tuesday, Sept. 8: What? Another new adult animation series on Netflix? Yup. This one, created by Andrew Law and Mike Schur (“The Good Place”), is about an Asian brother (Law) and sister (Poppy Liu) living “fun, messy lives” in New York City until a third, more organized sibling (Stephanie Hsu) shows up on their doorstep wanting to hang out. You can see where all the comedy will come from, but with Law and Schur involved, it won’t be a snooze.

“Stavros Halkias: Uncle Stav” | Netflix | Stand-up comedy

Special, Tuesday, Sept. 8: In his second special for Netflix (third overall), actor/comedian/podcaster/new uncle Stavros Halkias has wise words for his cousin: “If you wait too long to come out to your grandmother, you’re gonna have to do it every time you see her.” As for Grandma, “Yeah, [her] brains are pretty much mush at this point. She’s 94 and pretty openly craving death right now.” Promo materials for the special explain, “With the same unruly charm [displayed in his other specials], Stavros has a little more wisdom to pass down this time around, proving you can be both a dirtbag and a role model at the same time.”

“The Paper” | Peacock | Comedy

Season 2 premiere, Wednesday, Sept. 9: Season 1 of this journalism-themed “The Office” spinoff started off slow, but picked up steam as the season went on. Since that’s basically how it went for “The Office” (and “Parks and Recreation), I have high hopes for this second season, which was greenlit even before S1’s premiere (so maybe studio execs had the same thought). As for what to expect this season, plot-wise, “After sweeping the Ohio Journalism Awards, Ned searches for a journalistic crusade, coming for a local private club and jeopardizing the paper, while he and Mare try to figure out their attraction, Esmeralda struggles to find her place, and the staff gradually mature as reporters.” All 10 episodes are available to stream on Peacock today.

“Last Seen” | Apple TV | Drama

Series premiere, Wednesday, Sept. 9: In this six-episode adaptation of Ryan David Jahn’s book, “The Dispatcher” (PUB, YEAR), Patrick Brammall plays police detective Ian Ridley, who became a dispatcher after the disappearance of his daughter 11 years ago. Refusing to believe she’s gone forever, Ridley jumps into action when he gets a call from a teen girl he believes is his. Today’s premiere consists of two episodes, with the other four dropping weekly thereafter.

“Colin from Accounts” | Paramount+ | Comedy

Season 3 premiere, Thursday, Sept. 10: Weren’t we just talking about Patrick Brammall? The actor also happens to be the co-star and co-creator of this Australian romantic comedy, which is poised to being its third and final season. Will the flawed, funny couple of Gordon (Brammall) and Ashley (creative partner Harriet Dyer) recover from the past and actually couple up? You won’t have to wait long to find out. All episodes of the will-they-or-won’t-they dramedy are available for you to stream today.

“The Terrors of Jordan Mendoza” | Adult Swim | Comedy

Series premiere, Sunday, Sept. 13, midnight ET: Jordan Mendoza (“Dave,” “Chad Powers,” “Ziwe”) stars in, directs, and executive produces this quarter-hour series following, press materials say, “a very scared man as he navigates a barrage of absurd, terrifying, and hilarious dreamscapes.” This ostensible blend of “Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared” and “Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace” sounds right up my alley, and the roster of guests — Thomas Lennon, Marc Maron, Haley Joel Osment, Randall Park, Wanda Sykes, Eva Victor, and Steve Buscemi — just screams quality. I can’t wait to find out what terrifies Mendoza.
