Is the Apple TV+ Free Trial Really Free? Yes, If You’re Part of the Ecosystem.

Apple offers a lot of different free trial options for its streaming service. However, most of them involve subscribing to Apple Music or purchasing an Apple device.

Lots of TV buffs (like me) will recommend Apple TV+ for its top-notch original content. In a world where quantity matters over quality, Apple tends to tune out all the noise and focus on prestige TV.

But signing up for the service can be a lot more complicated. Depending on your eligibility, you may be able to get more than the standard 7-day trial.

In this guide, I’ll go over all of Apple’s best deals—you won’t want to miss out on these savings!

Most new customers will be eligible for the seven-day free trial, but if you have an Apple device, you can extend that trial to a full month with Apple One, and if you’ve recently purchased a new Apple device, you can claim three full months.

If you’ve exhausted all of your free trial avenues, you can still get a sweet discount if you’re a student. Verified students can bundle Apple TV+ and Apple Music for just $5.99/mo.—less than either service costs individually.

Deal #1: How to get Apple TV+’s one-month free trial

Apple One is the best choice for die-hard Apple fans, and it bundles four premium Apple services into one. According to Apple’s price breakdown, individual subscriptions to iCloud+, Apple TV+, Apple Music, and Apple Arcade would normally cost $28.96/mo. But with Apple One, you’ll save $9.00/mo. and only pay $19.95/mo. for all four services together.

If that still feels like too much to pay, you can elect to only take advantage of Apple One’s savings for a single month by claiming Apple One’s free trial. You’ll get a free month of any Apple One service that you’re not already using, including Apple TV+.

The big catch with Apple One is that you can’t just sign up on any computer or any TV. You’ll have to use an Apple device specifically—sorry to Android and Windows users.

Who’s eligible: New Apple TV+ customers not claiming other free trials. Must own an Apple device running the latest version of iOS, iPadOS, or macOS, although the device doesn’t need to be recently purchased.

How to claim:

  1. Make sure your Apple device (iPhone, iPad, or Mac computer) is running the latest software update.
    1. You can update your device by going to the Settings app and checking Software Updates under the “General” tab.
  2. Open settings, tap your name (this might be marked by a circle with your initials), and then tap “subscriptions.”
  3. Make sure you don’t already have an Apple TV+ subscription running. This trial will not give you credit if you’re already a subscriber.
  4. There should be a white box under “Options” advertising Apple One. Tap “Try It Free.”
    1. I recommend toggling on “Renewal Receipt Emails” on this page if you haven’t already. This will make it easier to keep track of your subscription if you plan on cancelling!
  5. When prompted, pick between the Individual, Family, and Premier tiers. Most people using the free trial will probably want Individual—it’ll charge you the least amount if you forget to cancel in a month. But Premier might be tempting if you’re into Apple News+ or if you own an Apple Watch that supports Apple Fitness+.
  6. Tap “Start Free Trial.”

Deal #2: How to get Apple TV+’s 7-day free trial

If you’d rather not claim the Apple One free trial or if you don’t own an Apple device, the standard 7-day trial is for you. Depending on your binge-watching speed, you can get a lot done in those seven days.

Who’s eligible: New Apple TV+ customers (no purchase required).

How to claim:

  1. Download the Apple TV+ app on any device or visit the Apple TV+ website.
  2. Click the prompt saying “Accept Free Trial.”

Deal #3: How to get Apple TV+’s three-month free trial

I’m not sure if it really counts as a “free” trial if it requires a big-ticket purchase like an iPhone, but this deal is worth checking out if you’re upgrading one of your devices anyways. Most Apple devices* come with a three-month free trial of at least Apple TV+, and you’ll often see other services like Apple Music or Apple News+ thrown in there as well.

Who’s eligible: New and qualified returning customers who have purchased a new Apple device* in the last 90 days.

How to claim:

  1. Open up the Settings app on your new device.
  2. Tap the white button that says “Apple TV+ Free for 3 Months.”
  3. Tap the blue text that says “Accept 3 Months Free.”
    1. If the device prompts you to download the TV app, do that.
    2. Once downloaded, go back and tap the blue text again.
  4. Your device will open the TV app. Tap the blue button that says “Accept Free Trial.”

Deal #4: Students can make the Apple TV+ savings last even longer

For the first four years of your academic career, you can claim this deal to get a stellar price on two of the best Apple subscriptions. Technically speaking, you don’t even have to be a current student as long as your school login is still active (but you didn’t hear that from me).

Who’s eligible: Students who verify their student status with SheerID.
