31 Days of Horror Movies on Shudder

When it comes to niche horror streaming services, it’s hard to beat Shudder. Curated by and for horror fans, the streaming service—which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year—Shudder has 720+ horror films and 55+ horror series. It’s the largest horror-centric streaming library I’ve encountered, and so far the beast best. Shudder has:

  • Hundreds of Shudder Original and Exclusive movies
  • Streaming exclusivity for John Carpenter’s original Halloween (1978)
  • A killer blend of classic and modern horror
  • Home of the V/H/S series
  • Horror host Joe Bob Briggs’ The Last Drive-In
  • Live watch parties
  • Exceptional horror documentaries
  • The best queer horror library
  • The best Giallo selection

Like Screambox, Shudder has everything, from classics to new stuff. Shudder also has the best original content, and loads of it. Last time I counted (around a year ago), it had nearly 200 original movies. That’s why, on our list of recommended horror movies on Shudder, only eight films are not originals or exclusives.

Pro tip: AMC+ includes all of Shudder—plus AMC, Sundance Now, IFC Films Unlimited, and more—for around the same monthly price.

As for themed weekends among our recs, the first one’s all about stirring your brains on high speed, with weird horror with Flying Lotus’s Kuso, Phil Tippett’s Mad God, and Ryan Kruger’s Fried Barry. Themed weekend #2 is devoted to the sublimely disturbing V/H/S found-footage anthology series—starting with the brand-new V/H/S/Halloween.

For the third weekend, we have two Shudder originals—the new Night of the Reaper and the slightly older Caveat. And for weekend #4, I’m spotlighting the latest Joe Bob Brigg’s Halloween special along with two of the scariest Shudder originals: When Evil Lurks and Late Night with the Devil.
