Amazon adding its well-known exclusive Prime Video content to Freevee means that the company is embracing its FAST channel and hoping more viewers will subscribe to the whole Prime Video experience to keep up with the shows.
FAST channels add content
Free, ad-supported TV (FAST) channels are nothing new. Hulu started as an ad-supported streaming service before offering ad-free plans! New streaming services such as Pluto TV, Roku, Crackle, and Tubi are some of the most popular free streaming services, and they offer channels in addition to on-demand content. Think of it like a cable package with live channels and on-demand content.
The movement of premium, exclusive content to free, ad-supported TV (FAST) channels are becoming more commonplace as studios squeeze more money from their content. Moving formerly paywalled movies and shows to a FAST channel allows the studio to receive additional ad revenue that wouldn’t be possible on a subscription ad-free network (like Amazon Prime Video and HBO Max).
People also really like FAST channels. They offer convenience, a distraction, and the option to explore a variety of content without leaving the platform. Even the ads are okay! A Yahoo and Publicis Media survey found that 82% of people expect and watch ads on free streaming services.
What does this mean for studios and streaming services? Well, it means we’re starting to go back to how things were, but this time FAST channels are replacing cable. And with streaming services raising their prices and offering ad-supported tiers, more Americans are willing to try out free services.
Freevee and Prime Video
Freevee is Amazon Prime Video’s free, ad-supported TV (FAST) channel. The service was formerly known as IMDb TV but was rebranded in 2022 to highlight its cost: free! The channel does produce its own content and is available as part of Amazon Prime Video or as a standalone app.
The streaming service offers 150 “live” channels offering looping content in addition to on-demand shows and movies.
Coming in May: The Summer I Turned Pretty, The Terminal List, Paper Girls, and the film The Vast of Night. The selected movies and shows will be on Freevee and Prime Video.
