What To Watch This Week: Stream Our Top 7 TV and Movie Picks (Sept. 14–20)

This week’s “What To Watch” picks include the sixth season of the Gary Oldman-powered “Slow Horses” (Apple TV), the new Sharon Horgan comedy “Youth” (HBO and HBO Max), the “Reacher” spinoff “Neagley” (Prime Video), and “Monster: Lizzie Borden,” the latest installment of Netflix‘s serial killer anthology series.

Speaking of serial killers, I’m also plugging the third season of Shudder‘s “The Creep Tapes.” Then, if you need a break from the violence, how about some cartoon bloodshed with “Golden Axe” on Paramount+.

Finally, if you feel like renting a movie this week, may I suggest the Green Day–flavored musical comedy “Nimrods,” which comes to video-on-demand retailers this Tuesday. Let’s hit the couch!

“The Creep Tapes” | Shudder, AMC+ | Horror

Season 3 premiere, Tuesday, Sept. 15: Hail Peachfuzz! And, while we’re at it, hail the studio execs who’ve had the good sense to greenlight this series based on the hilariously disturbing “Creep” movies. In the third season, co-writer and co-executive producer Mark Duplass returns as the gleefully twisted killer Josef/Peachfuzz who happily screens video tapes of his bloody exploits for doomed captive viewers. We get two-episode drops every Tuesday through Sept. 29.

“Golden Axe” | Paramount+ | Animation, comedy, fantasy

Series premiere, Wednesday, Sept. 16: This new series from Mike McMahan (“Star Trek: Lower Decks”) and Joe Chandler adapts the popular 1990s Sega arcade game franchise into an animated action-comedy starring Matthew Rhys (“Widow’s Bay”), Danny Pudi (“Community”), Lisa Gilroy, Liam McIntyre, and Carl Tart. According to Paramount+, “legendary warriors Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead reunite to save the land of Yuria from Death Adder, the evil giant who refuses to stay dead. Their quest becomes considerably more complicated when they are joined by Hampton Squib, an inexperienced and wildly underprepared adventurer whose ambitions are much greater than his abilities.” We get all 10 episodes in a nice, fat binge-drop today.

“Neagley” | Prime Video | Action, drama, mystery

Series premiere, Wednesday, Sept. 16: “Reacher” fans reaching for more of their favorite action-packed, ass-kickin’ show can rejoice: This is a spinoff featuring fan-favorite character Frances Neagley (Maria Sten), a Chicago P.I. and a Reacher protégé from back in their military days. In this series, which will definitely see cameos from Reacher himself (Alan Ritchson), Neagley is on a quest to avenge a dear friend who was killed suspiciously. All eight episodes stream today.

“Slow Horses” | Apple TV | Drama

Season 6 premiere, Wednesday, Sept. 16: If James Bond were a loser burnout eating lukewarm takeaway, you’d get “Slow Horses.” This critically acclaimed thriller follows Slough House, MI5’s exile department for disgraced agents led by a cynical, sharp-tongued Gary Oldman. Season 6 drops viewers right into the fire: someone is systematically hunting down these misfits, wiping them from official records and forcing them on the run. New episodes stream weekly through October 21.

“Monster: Lizzie Borden” | Netflix | Drama

Limited series premiere, Thursday, Sept. 17: Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s “Monster” serial killer anthology series takes on its fourth subject: Lizbeth “Lizzie” Borden, who was accused of the brutal 1892 axe murders of her father and stepmother. There’s one difference, though — besides the obvious (gender) — from the serial killers “Monster” already covered (Dahmer, Gein, and the Menendez Brothers). Unlike her would-be peers, Borden (portrayed here by Ella Beatty) was acquitted of her supposed crimes. All eight episodes are available to stream starting today.

“Youth” | HBO, HBO Max | Comedy, drama

Series premiere, Sunday, Sept. 20, 10 p.m. ET: From creator/star Sharon Horgan (“Catastrophe,” “Divorce”) comes this romantic comedy series about Alex (Horgan), a fiftysomething divorced literary agent looking for love (or just sex) while also balancing her career, a teenage son, and parents with dementia. Horgan’s shows — the ones she acts in as well as creates — are typically mid to great, so high hopes for this one. It’s a two-episode premiere tonight, then the other six eps will come weekly thereafter.
