The channels you’ll need to watch CFL games

Every game of the 2022 CFL season will air on ESPN2, ESPNews, and ESPN+ in the US. You can also watch occasional full-game replays on ESPN3.

While most CFL games stream exclusively on ESPN+, you’ll need ESPN2 to watch the Grey Cup championship game in November. Here’s a breakdown of each channel’s regular season game count:

  • ESPN+ (61 games)
  • ESPN2 (15 games)
  • ESPNews (5 games)

For Canadian viewers, all CFL games air across TSN’s channels—including select Canadian French–language coverage on RDS and RDS2.

Pros

  • Every CFL channel
  • Unlimited cloud DVR (for 9 mos.)
  • ESPN+ and Disney+ bundle included

Cons

  • Small sports channel lineup
  • Only 2 simultaneous streams allowed

Hulu + Live TV is the best TV provider for watching the CFL because it’s the only service that offers all three CFL channels.

With ESPN+ incorporated into Hulu + Live TV at no extra cost, you’ll get every CFL game in one place. That’s hard-to-find convenience, as sports leagues continue to scatter across various channels and streaming services. (We’re looking at you, NFL and MLB.)

The CLF series page on Hulu displays upcoming games on the Schedule tab.

If your football fandom extends beyond the CFL, Hulu + Live TV has all the essential channels for watching NFL and NCAA college football games. After all, the ESPN channels alone are home to Monday Night Football matchups and over 40 college bowl games. ESPN2 even aired the Women’s Football Alliance (WFA) Pro National Championship game earlier this month.

With all that coverage, we’re happy to report that Hulu + Live TV also has unlimited cloud DVR storage space—an essential feature for any sports fan. The DVR allows you to record and hold onto any game, series, or movie for up to nine months.

Best for CFL and NFL: DIRECTV

Price:
$64.99–$139.99/mo.*
CFL channels:
ESPN2 and ESPNews
NFL channels:
CBS, ESPN, FOX, NBC, and NFL Network
Features:
200 hr. DVR included

*For 12 months plus taxes and fees w/24 mo agmt. AutoPay & Paperless bill req’d. Regional Sports Fee up to $11.99/mo is extra & tax applies. Prices higher in 2nd year.

Pros

  • 1 season of NFL SUNDAY TICKET included
  • Over 20 basic sports channels
  • Wide regional sports network (RSN) availability

Cons

  • Expensive plans
  • 2-yr. contract for new DIRECTV customers
  • Price increase after 12 mos.

DIRECTV provides the ultimate TV experience for fans of Canadian and American football. The satellite service carries ESPN2 and ESPNews for CFL action, plus every primary NFL channel.

Beyond traditional football coverage, DIRECTV goes the whole nine yards as the exclusive home of NFL SUNDAY TICKET. While the sports add-on is available just for the 2022 NFL season, it’s the only way to get every live out-of-market NFL game.

New subscribers who sign up for the DIRECTV CHOICE™ plan or above (starting at $69.99 a month)* get NFL SUNDAY TICKET at no extra cost. The catch is that DIRECTV requires you to sign a two-year contract with a price increase after 12 months. That’s a big commitment—especially because NFL SUNDAY TICKET is likely moving to a streaming service in 2023.1

In the long run, we recommend DIRECTV only to the most committed sports fans. There are many sports channels and packages to admire on DIRECTV. But Canadian fans will still need a separate subscription to ESPN+ to get complete CFL coverage.

CFL content:
Exclusive live games and on-demand replays

Pros

  • Exclusive CFL games
  • Inexpensive pricing
  • Rich on-demand sports library

Cons

  • Traditional ESPN networks not included
  • Limited NFL games
  • Regional blackouts for major league sports

It’s a no-brainer that you’ll need ESPN+ to watch most CFL games this season. Luckily, the streaming service costs only $6.99 a month on its own and gives you 61 regular season matchups.

ESPN+ even takes its CFL content a step further with a handful of behind-the-scenes programs that highlight past CFL seasons. It’s nowhere near as much content as you’d find on NFL Game Pass, but it’s still worth checking out.

The CFL hub page on ESPN Plus shows rows of live and upcoming events and on-demand games.
The CLF hub page on ESPN+ also displays ESPN2 and ESPNews games, which require a TV provider login to access.

Beyond the CFL, ESPN+ also streams one exclusive NFL International Series game and around 15 Big 12 college matchups each year. Though, Canadian sports fans may be more interested in the fact that you can stream every out-of-market NHL game on ESPN+.

How to watch the CFL for free

Unfortunately, there isn’t an easy way to watch CFL games for free. Because games don’t air on over-the-air (OTA) channels like ABC, CBS, FOX, or NBC, the only way to watch the CFL inexpensively is by signing up for ESPN+ at $6.99 a month.

Of course, you can always sign up for a free live TV streaming service trial to access ESPN2 and ESPNews games without paying. But most free trials last seven days, so you won’t get much CFL coverage during that period.

The following live TV streaming services carry the two ESPN channels and currently offer free trials:

Final take

To watch CFL games in the US, you’ll need a TV plan that includes ESPN2 and ESPNews on top of an ESPN+ subscription.

Hulu + Live TV is our favorite TV provider for watching the CFL because it carries every game and has unlimited cloud DVR storage. With plans starting at $69.99 a month, Hulu + Live TV is the only TV provider that includes and integrates ESPN+ within its service. It also comes bundled with Disney+ for added entertainment.

If you want the most CFL and NFL coverage, we recommend DIRECTV with NFL SUNDAY TICKET. While the satellite service comes at a higher cost and includes a two-year contract, new subscribers can get NFL SUNDAY TICKET for free and enjoy the most gridiron action in one service. Naturally, you’ll still need ESPN+ to round out your CFL coverage. But the streaming service costs only $6.99 a month on its own.

Where can I watch the CFL in Canada?

If you’re located in Canada, you can watch English-language CFL coverage across TSN’s five channels. Select games with Canadian French–language commentary air on RDS and RDS2.
