At CableTV.com, we aim to keep you informed about all things related to television. While we often talk about TV providers and DVRs, the most basic aspect of television—the TV itself—is often overlooked. So, we looked into which TVs on the market will deliver the best home viewing experience for however you watch TV.
Best TVs for Students
Best TV for Overall Quality
Using organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology, this top-tier LG television delivers a clear, color-saturated picture that is virtually unmatched. As one reviewer put it, this is “the TV I’ve been waiting for!”
If you want one of the best TVs on the market and you have the budget for an ultra-thin, top-tier TV, this is the TV we recommend.
Best TV for Sports
We could recommend the entire Sony A1E series, but we chose the fifty-five-inch version so you would be able to compare it to the other fifty-five-inch TVs on our list. In terms of picture quality, the Sony fifty-five-inch A1E TV competes with the LG TV we recommended earlier and uses the same OLED technology.
All the colors on this TV are outstanding and the blacks are perfect, but it’s the way it handles motion that makes it so good for sports. As people and objects move across the screen, the picture remains clear and sharp with no tracers or distortion. This lets you enjoy the game without distraction.
The biggest drawback of the A1E is that the stand causes an incline, so this TV functions better when mounted on a wall. Unfortunately, it’s also among the heaviest of all the TVs on our list, so we strongly recommend professional installation.
Best Potential for a Deal
We have another recommendation in the line of high-quality LG OLED TVs, but this TV is nearly as good as the W7P. The differences are a barely perceptible step down in picture quality and a significant step up in weight. Also, the C7P is only available in sizes up to sixty-five inches, while the W7P goes all the way up to seventy-seven inches. However, we’re recommending the fifty-five-inch C7P, so the difference in size availability doesn’t directly apply here.
The biggest plus to the C7P is the price. While it is still among the most expensive on our list, it’s less than a third of the price of the W7P—that makes it a great value. Plus, some experts expect that price is likely to drop in 2018.
Best TV for Color
We’re recommending the QN55Q7F, but you really can’t go wrong with any TV in the QNQ7F series. Countering the OLED used by LG, the Samsung QNQ7F series uses what the company calls Quantum dot LED (QLED) technology.
Despite their similar acronyms, OLED and QLED function differently. However, they both deliver an amazing picture quality and sharp contrasts. While the OLED technology from LG is a bit more innovative, the Samsung QLED technology still delivers strong colors across the spectrum and comes at a slightly lower cost.
Best TV Value
Because the Sony X900E uses conventional LED technology instead of OLED, its picture quality isn’t quite as great as the Sony A1E. On the flip side, the X900E is more affordable and still delivers a great picture for its price range.
The colors are vibrant, and motion displays clearly and sharply. One drawback to the X900E is that when it’s viewed from angles about twenty degrees to the right or left, the colors look pale—especially black.
Best TV for Movies
The VIZIO D-Series is hit or miss. While all the TVs in the series use LED technology, only a couple have local dimming. Local dimming is a feature that allows the brightness on parts of the TV’s display to be reduced in relation to other parts of the display. This ability can create more contrast and color dynamics, adding to the overall picture quality.
Note: You may notice that this TV has an Amazon rating of only one star. That rating is based off just one customer who was dissatisfied with VIZIO in general, not this TV specifically. VIZIO TVs come in a wide range of quality, and the expert reviews on this specific TV are all positive.
We’re recommending the D65-E0 because it is among the most affordable sixty-five-inch TVs with such technology. Additionally, its larger display and high-contrast ability make it a great TV for movies.
Best TV for Gaming
The TCL P607 provides a wide range for colors and great contrast. If you watch a lot of sports, this TV is a great choice because of its ability to display quick motion clearly. That motion clarity combined with a low input lag make this TV great for gaming as well. You’ll notice how quickly and clearly your character reacts to your controls.
If that’s not enough, this High Dynamic Range (HDR) TV is surprisingly affordable. However, it’s worth noting that this TV does lose some picture quality when viewed from an angle.
Best Low-Cost UHD TV
The Toshiba Amazon Fire TV integrates Amazon Prime, Amazon Fire, and Alexa voice remote into a 4K television.
While the picture quality on this TV isn’t as high as others on this list, it’s still good enough to qualify as UHD (Ultra High Definition). The best part about Toshiba Amazon Fire TV is the price, which is among the lowest you’ll find for 4K picture quality.
How to Choose a TV
Choosing which television to buy requires comparing several elements at once. Purchasing the cheapest TV may leave you wishing you’d gotten a TV with better picture quality, but buying a TV simply because it was the biggest one in the store could leave you strapped for cash. So before you buy your next TV, consider finding a balance of the following, as they all affect your TV-owning experience.
- Display Size
- Display Quality
