What To Watch This Weekend: Stream Our Top 7 TV and Movie Picks (Mar. 2—9)

Entertainment writer Randy Harward recommends the best shows, movies, and more on TV this week, including "DTF St. Louis," "Marshals," "Scrubs," and "The Rise and Fall of Reggie Dinkins."

A collage of images from "Rooster," "Vladimir," "Ted," and "RJ Decker," shows covered in CableTV.com’s What to Watch This Week column for Mar. 2–8.
Clockwise from left: “Rooster” (Katrina Marcinowski/HBO), “Vladimir” (Netflix)," “Ted” (Peacock), and “RJ Decker” (Disney/Dana Hawley).

This week’s “What To Watch” picks include the series premieres of “Rooster” (HBO Max), “Vladimir” (Netflix), and “RJ Decker” (ABC, Hulu), plus the return of “Ted” (Peacock).

We also recommend the eighth and final season of “Outlander” (STARZ), and the series premiere of “Young Sherlock” (Prime Video). Let’s hit the couch!

New on ABC and Hulu this week

“RJ Decker” | ABC, Hulu | Drama

Series premiere, Tuesday, Mar. 3, 10 p.m. ET: Are you a sucker for stories about wiseasses in floral shirts who left behind their first careers (in this case, crime and photojournalism) to solve cases in sunny locales (South Florida here) as a private detective? As much as I’d like to say I’m immune to such formulaic storytelling, I’m just not. And this adaptation of the Carl Hiaasen novel “Double Whammy” is just what I need right now, coming out of winter. Scott Speedman (“Felicity,” “The Strangers”) stars.

New on Prime Video this week

“Young Sherlock” | Prime Video | Drama

Series premiere, Wednesday, March 4: If you liked Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes flicks, you’ll probably love this prequel series starring Hero Fiennes Tiffin (“After”) in the titular role and featuring Ritchie in the director’s chair (for some episodes). The show takes us back to Sherlock’s first case—and it’s a doozy of a murder investigation, taking us on an adventure from Victorian England to parts unknown. The entire eight-episode season streams on Prime Video starting today.

New on Peacock this week

“Ted” | Peacock | Comedy

Season 2 premiere, Thursday, March 5: Everybody’s favorite sweary bear is back in a prequel series no one could’ve predicted, much less imagined would get a second season. Oh, listen to me, acting like I’m above potty-mouthed plushies. In fact, I love me some lowbrow humor, especially when it’s packaged with heart—and sometimes even jaded TV writers need a “Thunderbuddy.” Bonus: Mark Wahlberg is not in the series. All eight episodes stream on Peacock today.

New on Netflix this week

“Vladimir” | Netflix | Comedy, drama

Limited series premiere, Thursday, Mar. 5: In this adaptation of Julia May Jones’ novel, Rachel Weisz trades in her usual poise for some dicey academic stalking in “Vladimir,” premiering March 5 on Netflix. According to the official Netflix logline, the series “follows a passionate but reckless professor as her world begins to unravel, finding her dangerously fixated on her charismatic new colleague (Leo Woodall)” while her husband, a professor at the same school, fights a creepy charge. It sounds like a midlife crisis, complete with fourth-wall breaks and the kind of sexy, questionable decision-making that prestige TV thrives on. Consider me enrolled.

New on STARZ this week

“Outlander” | STARZ | Drama, fantasy

Season 8 premiere, Thursday, Mar. 5, 8 p.m. ET: It’s almost over. After a seven-season decade of kilts, corsets, and questionable medical practices, the final ten episodes of what fans call “Droughtlander” premiere today. In this new eighth season Claire (Caitríona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) retreat to a drastically changed Fraser’s Ridge as the Revolutionary War finally arrives at their front door. Expect more sweeping romance, brewing family scandals, and enough dramatic yearning to power a small village. It’s the end of an era for our favorite time-traveling masochists—bring your tissues and booze.

New on HBO and HBO Max this week

“Rooster” | HBO, HBO Max | Comedy, drama

Series premiere, Sunday, Mar. 8, 10 p.m. ET: Bill Lawrence is apparently allergic to sleep—balancing the “Scrubs” revival and new seasons of “Ted Lasso,” and “Shrinking” this year—yet he still found time to co-parent this campus comedy with Matt Tarses. Steve Carell plays a writer navigating a prickly relationship with his professor daughter (Charly Clive), a role tailor-made for his signature “funny-sad” acting style. Look for Lawrence-verse staples John C. McGinley and Phil Dunster (Jamie Tartt himself) to round out the ensemble.
