What are Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots?
All Xfinity internet customers with a postpaid plan have free access to Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots—on-the-go internet that doesn’t count against your data limits.
In this guide, we’ll teach you how Comcast’s Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots work, how to access a hotspot Wi-Fi network, and where to find free Xfinity Wi-Fi near you. We’ll also highlight Xfinity internet plans and show you how to troubleshoot Xfinity Wi-Fi.
How do Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots work?
You’ve probably spotted a Wi-Fi network named XFINITY or xfinitywifi near you—that’s an Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspot. These hotspot networks come built into Xfinity’s xFi gateways (rentable modem/routers available for $14 per month). If you’ve got an xFi gateway at home, you probably host two Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspot networks in addition to your secure personal Wi-Fi network.
Don’t fret, because these host networks won’t slow down your browsing or compromise your home Wi-Fi security. Instead, you can think of the Wi-Fi hotspot networks you host as a neighborly gesture to visitors looking for internet in your area.
And you’re not alone. The Xfinity hotspots your xFi gateway supports are part of over 18 million Xfinity public Wi-Fi hotspots in the US.
This vast network helps you and other Xfinity customers get Wi-Fi while you’re visiting different neighborhoods, as well as arenas and airports, bakeries and bars, and malls and medical facilities.
Why should I use Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots?
You can connect your phone to Xfinity hotspots while you’re out and about to save your cellular data. It’s also an excellent alternative to using your smartphone as a hotspot to connect your laptop to the internet while you’re away from home.
Plus, the data you use on Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots doesn’t count against your monthly Xfinity data allowance. When Xfinity sends you alerts that you’re nearing your data cap, you can jump on an Xfinity hotspot instead to avoid overage fees ($10 per 50 GB block of data, which can add up).
Unfortunately, an Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspot won’t be as speedy as your home network. But the internet speeds are fast enough to support email and browsing. You can even stream video if you’re patient enough to handle buffering. Ugh, buffering.
How do I connect to Xfinity hotspots?
All you need to access an Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspot is a Wi-Fi enabled device (your phone, laptop, etc.), a monthly Xfinity postpaid plan (sorry, prepaid plan pals!), and your Xfinity account login info.
Connect to an Xfinity hotspot
- On your device’s Wi-Fi settings, look for a Wi-Fi network named XFINITY or xfinitywifi.
- Once you select either network, your device may prompt you to enter your username and password, which are the same as your Xfinity account’s username and password.
- Enter your account information, and then you’re good to go.
If you’ve forgotten your Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspot login information, or you haven’t set up an account yet, head over to the Xfinity account login page. You can look up your Xfinity ID, reset your password, or create your Xfinity ID all from that page.
How do I find an Xfinity hotspot?
In the big cities Xfinity supports, you probably wouldn’t be able to throw a rock without it landing within an Xfinity hotspot. But in more rural areas, the Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspot map and Xfinity WiFi Hotspots app help big-time to locate hard-to-find internet.
If you don’t see an Xfinity hotspot pop up in your Wi-Fi settings, head over to the online Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspot map. Scroll down that page to find a box to enter your zip code into. With that info, Xfinity will show you all the hotspots in your area.
While the website works just fine, the Xfinity WiFi Hotspots app (for Android and iOS) will knock your socks off by comparison. It offers both a map and list view, and it even works with your phone maps to direct you to hotspots.
So if you’re thirsty in a Wi-Fi desert, pop open your Xfinity WiFi Hotspots app and use it to guide you to adventure and internet connection.
Populated areas like Downtown Seattle have tons of available Xfinity Wi-Fi Hotspots, but suburban and rural areas won’t have quite as many.

Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspot troubleshooting
Trouble with your Xfinity hotspot? We’ve got some tips and tricks to help you out.
What is the username and password for Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots?
The username and password for Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots are the same as your Xfinity account information. You can dig that up—or activate your account for the first time—on Xfinity’s account login page.
How do I auto-connect to an Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspot?
From the Wi-Fi settings on your smartphone, use the section title Auto-Join or Auto-Connect to give your phone permission to connect to hotspots.
Aren’t smartphones so polite, asking permission for everything?
Why can’t I connect to an Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspot?
Xfinity limits how many devices can use a hotspot at a time. If that’s the case, trying another nearby hotspot could help.
But sometimes Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots have crummy connectivity or Xfinity’s network drops, so you might be out of luck.
When you’ve put in your correct login information, and you still can’t connect to an Xfinity hotspot, there’s not much more you can do but pray to the internet gods that the hotspot sorts itself out quickly.
How do I turn off my xFi gateway’s public Wi-Fi hotspots?
Use the Xfinity app (not the Xfinity WiFi Hotspots app) to turn off your home router’s Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots:
- From the Xfinity app home screen, click on your modem/router’s name.
- Click on See Network.
- Go to Advanced Settings.
- Choose Xfinity WiFi Hotspot Network from the list of options.
- Toggle off Participate in Xfinity Wifi.
Changing this setting will upset your home Wi-Fi network for a minute or so. It will take up to 24 hours for your xFi gateway to turn off the Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots.
Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspot FAQ
Which plans give you Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspot access?
Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspot access comes included with all Xfinity postpaid plans. That’s every monthly plan from Performance Starter to Gigabit+, with or without a yearly contract. Even Xfinity’s low-income internet plan, Internet Essentials, comes with Xfinity hotspot access.
But if you have Xfinity prepaid internet, you’re tough out of luck. Xfinity’s prepaid customers may have more flexibility to pay as they go, but they can’t access Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots with their plan.
Is Xfinity hotspot free for customers?
Xfinity postpaid customers can use Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots for free all across the US. But if you have a prepaid Xfinity plan, you won’t be able to access Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots. Bummer.
Does Xfinity have a mobile hotspot?
Xfinity doesn’t have a device built primarily for use as a mobile hotspot. But if you’re an Xfinity Mobile customer, your Xfinity Mobile smartphone can function as a mobile hotspot.
Can I just buy Xfinity hotspot?
No, Xfinity hotspot access is not available for purchase. The only way to have full access to Xfinity hotspots is with a postpaid Xfinity Internet plan. However, if you are not an Xfinity customer, you can access select public hotspots that are specially marked on the map.
In contrast, Cox Wi-Fi allows non-customers to temporarily buy internet passes to use its hotspots.
Does Xfinity hotspot have a limit?
Xfinity hotspot usage does not count against your monthly data allowance, so you won’t encounter any data caps while using one. The bad news is that the connection won’t be as fast as your home Wi-Fi, so you might encounter some buffering.
